Rainy Day Professional Workwear

What you need to look professional when it's raining is a rain coat, an umbrella, rain boots, proper clothing, and maybe even a rain hat to keep your work outfit dry while still looking professional. how to look professional when it's raining. rainy day professional outfit. rainy work outfit inspiration. how to look professional and not get wet when it's raining | brazenandbrunette.com

Hello lovelies! I’m back with another work wear Wednesday! In case you haven’t noticed, it’s May. And May had to follow the April showers that brought the May flowers, of course but I'm a month behind haha. Coincidentally, right now it’s actually drizzling haha so I’m already in the mood. Growing up a farm girl, I do always love the rain but to be honest I dread rainy days during the work week. It can actually be tricky to make sure you’re covered up while still looking professional! And if we’re being honest, I still have a relatively small work wardrobe so I only have about 3 rainy day appropriate outfits which means I’m up a creek on outfit ideas if it rains every single day in a work week. But at least I do have something, right?

Anyways, why I wanted to talk about this today is because when I was a 1L looking to get work clothes, I was focused on pencil skirts and blouses and “work appropriate rain boots” weren’t exactly high up on my list. But basically no matter where you live, you’re probably going to have to deal with getting to work without getting drenched at some point in your career. This post is just to help you keep those days in the back of your mind as you get ready to adult so that you’re prepared. So, here’s some basics…

Rain coat

Woah, didn’t expect to see that coming did you? In undergrad and most of law school, I was perfectly protected on my way to class with a DG pullover rain jacket. It kept me warm, it kept me dry, and it was comfortable to sit through class in. But then I got a job my 3L year and it rained one day and I realized that a windbreaker jacket couldn’t even be business causal, much less business professional. So I went jacket-less and just prayed my umbrella would be enough. Spoiler: it wasn’t. First off, usually when it’s raining it’s a colder day so not having a jacket at all was a freezing idea. Second, there was wind which not only made me more aware of how cold I was without a jacket but also made the rain blow sideways so my umbrella couldn’t protect both my head and my outfit so decisions had to be made. So yeah, rain jacket, v important. I shared the trench that I have in my outerwear post already so I won’t bore you with the same paragraph twice, but real quick here’s a tip. If you don’t necessarily need a rain coat right now, wait and try to buy one at the end of summer because they’ll likely be on sale then. You’re welcome.

Umbrella

Shocker, I know. But I do have some overthinker-type thoughts for this as well. If you can, I highly recommend a big dome umbrella. The little bell shape usually does a really good job of keeping everything covered and dry. Most of these tend to be clear because you can even pull them down over your face but then can still see, which I think is really smart. I have two big umbrellas that I love to use because I have a pretty big and very expensive purse that I want to keep dry at all costs, so I need to know my umbrella is big enough for the both of us.

But these umbrella’s biggest pro is also its biggest con. I have to keep my giant umbrella in my trunk because it’s just too big to fit anywhere else in my car. And it takes up a lot of space in my small work area. And it looks a little too extra if I have to carry it out leaving work after the storm has passed and it’s a sunny day. So the other alternative is a travel umbrella. I got one of these for study abroad and they are amazing. They made some that fold up into the size of your hand!! So it easily fits in your purse and you can keep it on hand at all times just in case (#mompurse) and don’t have to worry about accidentally poking people with your umbrella in the elevator. Just keep in mind that usually these don’t cover near as much so you are taking a pretty big risk. For sure always wear a rain coat when you use an umbrella to make sure that you’re staying as covered as possible. Okay I’m going to stop talking about umbrella’s because Rihanna is currently stuck in my head (and I’m sure now it’s stuck in yours too).

Rain boots

Ooh another surprise! But there’s some thought that you might want to put into these. I have tall rain boots which are great because they completely cover up my legs up to my knees so are perfect for dresses and skirts. If you have narrow enough pants (that won’t wrinkle too terribly), you can also tuck your pants into these and keep your pants protected. This is really important for me because I’m too lazy to walk all the way around puddles so I need to be able to just plow right through them and not have to worry about splashes getting everywhere. And because my trench coat is down almost to my knees, that means my coat + boots = an almost completely protected outfit, which is the main goal.

On the other hand, is short boots. Tall boots scream “not professional” so I always bring a small tote bag (like a reusable grocery bag) with me and a pair of flats in my purse and then will change out of my boots and into my flats once I get to work. If it’s still raining at 5, I can change back but if it’s not I do feel a tad ridiculous carrying a purse, a lunch bag, and a boot bag. But if your office is on the business casual side of life, you can probably get away with wearing short rain boots all day. The tradeoff is not having your pants quite as protected, but you only have to wear one pair of shoes all day. And short rain boots are usually designed a little more to look like regular shoes than big ol’ traditional rain boots. If you want to go this route, my advice is to definitely get a pair of black rain boots.

Clothes

Okay I actually don’t have much on this because basically my rainy day clothes are just my normal warmer clothes but just covered up with the above items. I do have just a few considerations for this, though. For your pants, you’re going to want to make sure you have them all hemmed to a perfect length. If it’s only lightly raining or just started raining you might not need rain boots yet, but if you have pants that brush the ground then the edges are probably going to get damp and gross.

If you do wear your rain boots with a skirt/dress, my recommendations to you would be to wear panty hose and/or get boot socks. Just because again, rainy days are usually colder days and you’ll want to be warm. Boots socks in general are a great investment because rubber shoes keep in basically no warmth so your toes will probably get a little cold. Bonus use for if it’s really snowy, you can also wear your rain boots as snow boots.

Rain hat

This is last because I think it’s the least necessary. When it rains, I typically will put my hair up because the frizz is real so there’s no point in me wasting my time to straighten my hair and the humidity always makes my curls fall. However, sometimes you have things like an interview or a presentation on a rainy day and need to feel on point and having your hair down does that. So a rain hat will do double duty with your umbrella to keep your hair dry (because oddly a lot of professional looking rain coats don’t have hoods). And if you are cursed with the frizz like me, an umbrella will only protect you against the rain pouring down on your head but not the moisture in the air that’s attacking your hair. I’m not saying a rain hat will give you blow-out luscious hair, but I am saying that the extra layer of protection will help.

Okay I’m done rambling for today! I will give a caveat for this post and warn y’all that I’m from the Texas panhandle which isn’t exactly known for getting rain (we actually have “pray for rain” on my churches prayer request list) so I don’t have just a ton of experience or tips for dealing with the rain (I’m sure you gathered that from my novel list of umbrella and rain boots haha). All this to say, if you’re from a rainy area or just have a consideration for how to stay dry while looking Rachel Zane, please leave a comment with your thoughts!!

5 Best Work Basics from Amazon

Summer internships are coming up, so here's 5 cheap work clothes option to help make it easier when you have to take an unpaid internship. where to find cheap work clothes. amazon business casual clothes. amazon business professional clothes. what to buy for a work capsule wardrobe. law school blog. law student blogger | brazenandbrunette.com

And I'm back with Work Wear Wednesday #2! Today I decided to share some workwear finds from Amazon of all places. As students, we get access to free Amazon Student Prime! This means free two-day shipping and free returns. With that plus cheap finds, getting work basics off Amazon is a way to start getting work wardrobe without spending much.

I'm low key obsessed with Amazon and shop on there way too much, but recently just decided to start buying more than just household items on there and try out their clothes. I was really worried about buying clothes from Amazon because I was afraid of getting clothes that were made out of cheap material and that looked nothing like what the picture was. This isn't the norm, but that's not to say that it hasn't happened to me. My biggest tip for buying clothes from Amazon is to read the reviews and especially look at any reviews with pictures if you can. Save your time and money and don't order something with a bunch of different people saying the material is scratchy or something. But if you do end up with a miss, the best part about Amazon is the free returns so just go ahead and send it back!

Basic camis

I ordered this white cami to wear with jeans and a cardigan this spring, but one day was like hey maybe it'll look good under a blazer and damn was I right! The material was perfect to be business-y and it has built-in fabric to keep my bra from showing through. I actually loved it so much that I went back and got it in black and green!

Basic shells

While camis are great under blazers, sleeveless work tops are great to wear suits when you need to be more formal. If your office is casual you might get away with wearing them as-is, but you can always make it more professional by adding a blazer or cardigan on top.

Basic pants

While you'll definitely need a suit, you won't necessarily need to wear your suit pants every single day and instead can wear just normal business professional pants. Since this pair is only $30, you can easily build a capsule wardrobe just by buying a black pair one month, a navy pair another month, and a gray pair another month!

Chiffon tops

Chiffon tops always look good for work because they're a step up from regular cotton shirts. Basically any color you get will go perfect with the pants above, and then you can mix and match to easily create a capsule wardrobe since this top is only $20 each.

Bow tie tops

Let's just all agree to never use the official term for these "pussy bow" and just call them by the less-awkward "bow tie" (even though it sounds like a guy's bow tie). Once you get past the name, bow tie tops are amazing for work! They look so stylish and classic tucked into a pencil skirt! Personally I think everyone should have one just because they look so damn good.

See? Some actually good stuff on there! And this is just 5 pieces of the literal thousands of professional clothing options on Amazon. Since there's nothing fancy about these pieces, you can easily stock up on them and instead of paying $100 for one pair of pants, you can get pants and 2-3 tops! But here's to hoping that one day $100 will actually be cheap for what we can afford to spend on work pants haha.

Professional Outerwear for Work

5 pieces of outerwear to add to your work wardrobe to conquer the elements, which what to wear to work when it's snowing and what to wear to work when it's raining. How to start building a professional wardrobe. What coats and jackets you really need for work. professional coats. work jackets. law school blog. law student blogger | brazenandbrunette.com

Hi hi hi! Since basically all I do anymore is work or watch Friends, I figured I'd start a new series called Work Wear Wednesdays where I share little tidbits I've learned out here in the real world. I'm still building my professional wardrobe and I know a lot of you are so this will just be a running list of things to look out for.

Related: How to build a lawyer wardrobe

These past two weeks in Dallas have been crazy with last week being so cold and this week being rain nonstop, so I thought I'd kick off the series talking about outerwear. And when I say outwear, I don't mean suit jackets or blazers. This is to protect your outfit and keep you warm/dry on your way to and from work.

Long coat

How to start building a professional wardrobe. What coats and jackets you really need for work. professional coats. work jackets. law school blog. law student blogger | brazenandbrunette.com

I'm listing this first because it's #1 on my buy list right now! I'm dying for this petite wool coat because it's not only warm but also very professional and aren't the buttons and oversized pockets the cutest?? (if you're not short like me, they also make a tall version as well). I think the camel color is just perfect and would go well with any outfit, and would look great over both black and navy. Now's actually a great time to buy a coat because they're all starting to go on sale (like those 2) so you can get them for really cheap and then have something for next fall and winter. One thing to keep in mind though is that if you do plan to wear this over suit jacket/blazer, then you'll want to size up at least one if not two sizes to make sure that you have room to move in it.

Quilted jacket

Let's just all stop and admit that a Burberry quilted jacket is just like the most timeless and good looking jacket you get. One of the lawyers I work with has one and 10/10 times it always raises her outfit to another dimension. I've asked for this for the past two Christmas so come December you can bet that I'll be hoping that third time's the charm and my parents won't again give me the "get a job and buy it yourself" line lol. But luckily there's still plenty of great quality dupes out there in case I don't get it. I guarantee you that any day you hear the wind chill has dropped that you'll get a little excited that you have an excuse to bust this bad boy out and show off how polished you can look while strolling in to read legal documents.

Puffer coat

I like to think of this as the other two's big brother. Those are for when the temps drop, but the puffer coat is for when the snow comes out and you're spending all morning just hoping for a text or call saying that the roads are too icy so just stay home. Believe it or not, Texas actually does snow in the panhandle where I'm from and went to college so I've had a trusty Land's End coat that has saved my life over the years. And if you live in a place that gets below freezing then just trust me that you'll want to get one long enough that covers your butt. As the name describes they aren't exactly Spanx, but one key trick I've learned is to get one that cinches on the inside! Pulling it in even just an inch on your waist can actually send the message of "there's a figure underneath all this" and can help you not feel like a whale with a ton of blubber.

Trench coat

The Trench Coat — 5 pieces of outerwear to add to your work wardrobe to conquer the elements, which what to wear to work when it's snowing and what to wear to work when it's raining. How to start building a professional wardrobe. What coats and jackets you really need for work. professional coats. work jackets. law school blog. law student blogger | brazenandbrunette.com

This has been my saving grace this past week!! Last fall I found my Banana Republic trench coat and was so excited because at that point my only water-proof jacket was a pullover rain jacket that had DG on it real big so basically my options on rainy days were to either look like a sorostitue or be soaked (although let's be real if I could I would've gotten the classic and iconic Burberry trench). Two quick tips about managing the rain when you're trying to be an adult— 1) get a dome-shaped umbrella because they protect you more than a normal umbrella and 2) wear travel rainboots to work and pack shoes in your bag to change in to or you're going to ruin your work shoes.

Duster cardigan

The Duster Cardigan — 5 pieces of outerwear to add to your work wardrobe to conquer the elements, which what to wear to work when it's snowing and what to wear to work when it's raining. How to start building a professional wardrobe. What coats and jackets you really need for work. professional coats. work jackets. law school blog. law student blogger | brazenandbrunette.com

A duster cardigan is perfect for the days when the wind makes it just a little cool, but it's not necessarily cold and you'd burn up in a regular old coat. If your office has a more casual vibe, then you might be able to pull off wearing this all day long (which is a major W because offices are always freezing). To my fellow shorties out there, live by the golden rule of always wearing heels when you wear these or seriously your legs will look six inches tall (I've learned this lesson the hard way).

And there you have it my friends! That's everything that either I currently own and am so grateful for or are currently dying to buy! Of course, this is a very small list with only 5 types of outwear, so I'd love to hear if any of y'all have any must-haves that need to be on my radar. Anyways, happy humpday and I'll see y'all soon :)
