How to Pick the Perfect Graduation Outfit

I GRADUATE IN A WEEK!!!!! Okay so a week + a day, but still! I've had my graduation dress picked out since Easter because obviously I'm excited, and my sweet boyfriend's mom bought my graduation shoes for me as a grad gift while we were out shopping together last month. So I'm pretty much all set and I'm so excited!

Anyways, so whether you're graduating law school along with me (heyyyy) or you're attending a friend's graduation, or you're graduating college, I have some ideas and inspiration for you.

The Dress

Okay so obviously this is the biggie! Most importantly, make sure your dress is comfortable because remember that we're going to be in big heavy (likely itchy) robes and sitting for a couple of hours. I actually got my dress back when I bought my Easter dress because I loved how light and breezy it was. One other thing to be mindful is exactly how much your robe will close. If your robe flashes your dress when you walk, you're going to want to keep that in mind and color-coordinate. How can you do this before you get your robe in? Either ask any of your friends who graduated last year or just creep on Instagram to see how it turned out in their pictures. 

Also, CHECK THE WEATHER! And often, because it changes. If a cold front or heat wave is coming in, adjust accordingly. Even if your ceremony is indoors, you'll likely take a lot of photos with friends and family outside so you don't want to be miserably shivering or dripping sweat. Also keep in mind the changes between if your ceremony started in the morning but you'll get done right at noon with a burning sun overhead or if it's starting while the sun's up but ending after it's set and cooled off a bit.

Now as to the style of the dress, that's completely up to you. I originally had planned on a more professional looking dress before I found the one that I'll be wearing. Personally I think sheath dresses are super flattering and look so dang polished. Pencil skirts with a top also look really classy but just realize that if your skirt starts to scooch up to your bra and show extra leg, you can't exactly pull it down without having to go all the way up your robe. And editor pants look nice too but just be mindful of how they'll look peeking out from under your robe. But the good thing about getting a professional dress for graduation is that you can wear it to your new big kid job!

But if you don't care about your dress screaming "I'm a lawyer," then you can definitely go with something more casual. The reason why I picked my dress is because I knew how cute and confident I'd feel in it at my graduation party, when that would be all that you can see. I just figured it doesn't really matter what you wear to the ceremony as long as you're comfortable because you really won't see it until after for pictures. Since graduation season is right at the start of wedding season, you can still get a lot of use out of a more "cute" option for the rest of the summer.

The Shoes

These are just as important, if not more important, as the dress because while the robe will cover your dress, your shoes are always there. Personally, I think black or nude heels are the best because they coordinate with the robe best. But if there's a lot of people graduating at once, a really colorful shoe can help your family find you in a crowd (it's how we always found my sister during cross country meets!). The shoes you pick out should be comfortable enough that you can gracefully walk without looking like a newborn giraffe, comfortable enough so that you don't die while standing up waiting in line to cross the stage, and manageable enough that you can easily tackle stairs and squat in (because remember you have to squat down a little so they can hood you). I also will warn you about getting too pointy of a heel. My best friend got a pair of those super cute studded Valentino heels for graduation, but sadly they got ruined as she walked across the parking lot to get inside for the ceremony because it was a hot day so the asphalt was melting and she ended up getting tar and rocks all stuck to the heel.

Definitely break in a new pair of shoes so that you don't get blisters. And a tip from my younger pageant days (hahaha true story), take your shoes outside to the gravel street and scuff up the bottoms (so probably not Loubs) so that there is some traction to help you not slip around on the stage. Or a quick spritz of hairspray at the last minute will help too if you don't want to ruin the bottoms.

The Accessories

Okay so personally I like to wear a necklace just so that when your robe is open your chest/neck doesn't look empty, but this is another thing you're going to want to check with your robe on. Just because it can either look really weird poking up out of the robe or might be right wear the collar is and rub, so just double check.

I feel like graduation is the time for statement earrings because it's a special occasion. Just make sure that whatever you pick will compliment your hair style for the day and won't be too distracting because remember you'll also be wearing a tam so you don't want to have too much going on up top.

November Stitch Fix

Hi I know I'm behind but really that's because November is flying by and basically my whole life is flashing right before my eyes. I say all this because I recently got an email that my December fix is being sent so I figured I should probably get this post up haha. For a full explanation about Stitch fix, you can read my Stitch Fix Review, but basically what it is, is they pick 5 pieces for you a month (can be tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, purse, shoes) and mail them to you. 

You then try them on in your home and then within 3 business days you decide what you love and what you'll pass on and you mail back the ones that weren't you're favorite and then buy the ones you want to keep. How they've picked these pieces is that there's a stylist who you'll tell all about what you like to wear, what you want to try wearing, and what you don't like. I personally really like this because it's more efficient than going from store to store to store to try on a ton of clothes and it's more successful than guessing how something will fit and taking a chance with online shopping since you have an expert deciding what you need and what size you need it in based off what you've given them. So far my stylist Lili has hit it out of the park 2/2 times so I'm personally a happy customer.

Anyways, I just found out that for any fix ordered between now and Christmas day, they'll waive your styling fee so basically you can try it for free and if you end up hating all 5 pieces (although I seriously doubt that), you pay nothing since shipping is nothing! Liverpool Bia Skirt

My box got delivered while I was at class so when I ran home to change during my lunch break before work, I was very excited to rip this thing open and see what workwear I got. I saw this skirt and instantly was like yep this is what I'm wearing today! I'm glad I did because my coworker complimented my skirt like literally the minute that I walked through the door. I'm in love with this skirt because unlike normal pencil skirts, this one is super strechy so I'm not stuck being all awkward climbing into my car or picking something up off of the ground because I can actually move in this thing. Not only that, I really like the black and white pattern because it's less boring than a solid color but isn't too out there of a print (you'll see what I'm talking about in a second haha). Obviously this one was a keep! I couldn't find the exact skirt, but here's a similar one.

Heartloom Chetna Cross Back Pullover

Thank you to everyone who voted in the poll on my Instagram story! For those of you who missed out, I was super torn about this sweater because it was so soft and warm and I really liked how it had the slight bell sleeves and an open back (which I found out looks better as just an open back than trying to pair it with a racerback bralette), but I wasn't the biggest fan of the stripes. This also was a little too loose on me so I had decided that if I was going to keep it then I would need to size down. In the end, I knew that the stripes just weren't happening for me so I decided to return it but I think I'm going to ask in my next box for something similar to this just a size smaller and without the stripes. I found a similar sweater here with the same sleeves that is still open back (just not as much).

Just Black Addison Skinny Jean

This is another piece that I included in the Insta story poll! In the request box on this fix I mentioned how I was looking for something for Thanksgiving and I know exactly why Lili picked these for me. These are jeggings which are super stretchy which would allow me to look cute for Thanksgiving dinner but still be comfortable with an extra full belly. I also loved these because I feel like olive-colored pants are having a moment right now so I was excited that she sent me something so on-trend. The reason why I felt like I needed y'all's help with these is that I was worried that they might be too trendy for me and also was concerned that I wouldn't know how to style it besides just with white and brown but literally every single person voted for me to keep them! 41 Hawthorn Valentina Faux Leather Trim Blouse

Okay so here's the backstory behind this shirt. Not only did I request Thanksgiving pieces, but just for fun I threw in there that it'd be nice to maybe get something I could wear out to the bars when I go meet my friends for drinks (wishful thinking because I like never go out anymore #old #lawstudentprobs). I've actually seen some fashion bloggers wear blue leopard so I think this might be an upcoming trend, so I have to give Lili props for trying to help me be ahead of the trends and push my comfort level. I'll admit that it actually did look pretty cute with my faux leather leggings and booties, and the fabric was really great too, but I this top was just a little too much for me. She did include a dressed-up look suggestion with this top for a way to wear this to work, but I just can't see my boss being cool with something this eye-catching. This piece also made me admit that I actually don't really like animal print that much so I went back into my settings and added that to the "I'd rather not" list. However, if you're intrigued with trying the blue leopard trend, here's a similar top!

Stitches&Stripes Emmie Lace-Up Shoulder Cutout Pullover

This sweater actually sold my sister on Stitch Fix (obviously we've talked about it before) and it went like this:

This is probably my favorite piece from this month (although I'm getting a whole lot of use out of that skirt) because it's a super warm sweater that's not too over-the-top but also not too boring so it felt like the perfect balance. It's great because I can be cozy and comfortable in class while I'm trying to stay focused in tax law haha. If you love it as much as I do, I found this sweater that's basically the same thing and on sale!

Overall thoughts

4/5 were out of the park so Lili just keeps getting better! In the request box I threw in that I'd like to be paired with Lili again just because I feel like this girl gets me and why ruin a good thing? I'm sure she has hundreds of other clients but hopefully it's easier on them that a new stylist doesn't have to learn all about me each month, but we'll see! Maybe I'll mix it up just to put their other stylists to the test haha. Stitch Fix Review

I've come to realize that subscription boxes are a slippery slope because once you get used to having one thing shipped to you, you kinda want everything shipped to you. I currently get my toothbrushes, wine, fitness/beauty supplies, and now clothes mailed to me! I originally had no plans to sign up for stitch fix but then I saw that they have work clothes and I was like ooh sign me up! To be honest, I wasn't quite sure what I was signing up for but I was like hey if this is a fail at least I can right a blog post about it. But if I had to describe my experience with Stitch Fix it would be surprisingly impressed!

What Stitch Fix is

So by now I'm sure you understand how subscription boxes work. You sign up and take a quiz about what you're looking for, and then every month (or however frequent) you get a box of goodies. What makes Stitch Fix different though is that you can return what you don't like! This was the big seller for me because I didn't want to get stuck paying for clothes that I knew I would never wear. What's also great is that instead of just scrolling through pages and pages and pages of clothes like normal online shopping, you have a personal shopper who will take what your style and clothing needs are and will pick pieces for you. 

So what I like is that they send you pieces and you get to try them on in your own home and you have 3 days to sleep on it before sending back what you don't love. I really like this concept because you can try on a shirt with different bras on try on pants with different tops that you already have to see if it will really work with what you already have. Plus, I just really don't like pushy sales ladies who insist that the dress is super flattering when in reality I look frumpy AF and they just want the commission.

Setting Up

So here's what I honest to God thought would happen... they'd push their clothes on me and I'd be stuck buying clothes that I would honestly never wear again. They had me take a style quiz but I didn't really have much hope in it because I figured an algorithm would take my response and group me into categories like "boho" or "edgy" and then I would just get whatever predetermined outfit was planned for that group. Not only that, I usually never shop online because different styles and brands fit differently so I hate the hassle of having to return something over and over again. 

But here's what did happen... their style quiz has a lot of sizing questions so they really know your sizes beyond just small, medium, or large. Then it goes into your style so they know what fits you like and what you hate (it goes through all the major body parts and you pick what to flaunt and what to downplay). Then you rate some of their own outfits as either love it or hate it so they get a sense of your style. This was where my responses went heavy on work clothes (business casual) and school clothes (laid-back casual). Next was the price, which at first I put $50-$100 for tops, bottoms, and dresses, but I was being an idiot and not thinking about how if they shopped in this range my total would end up being $250-$500 since you get 5 pieces. The next step is such a good idea because they have you link up your Instagram so they know what you currently wear and a Pinterest board so they know what you'd like to wear. This is also where you can tell them more about yourself so this is exactly what I said— I'm a law student so for class I mostly wear jeans&cute top/dress but for my work I dress business casual/professional and sometimes have to go to court or meet with judges. If it helps, I have dark brown hair/eyes. I'm petite but very top-heavy. Because of my big boobs, I need all tops/dresses to be flexible in the top half but prefer them to be tighter below them so I don't look pregnant (A line and baby-doll styles are unflattering on me).

The last thing was choosing your frequency. You can choose between getting clothes sent seasonally, every other month, every month, or every few weeks. I chose monthly because I honestly hate the time it takes to go shopping but I do feel like I wear the same thing every week. This is why I also had to change my prices from $50-100 to >$50 because dropping $250-500 every month would kill my budget. But if I weren't getting it so often I probably would go back to that option. 

What I Got

I opened up my box and was floored because I actually got a box full of 2 school pieces and 3 work pieces! I realize that my expectations were probably just a little low, but I really didn't think that I would get something so personalized! If they are using an algorithm then they're using a damn good one because everything I got was exactly what I wanted. I know this sounds overdramatic but I'm seriously glad that I signed up for this because I am one happy camper!  

Another thing that pleasantly surprised me was that they sent little cards for each piece showing how it could be dressed up or dressed down with full outfit inspiration. I really appreciated this because I'm the type to Pinterest "red Hunter rain boots outfits" to get some inspiration for a new look. Also in the box was the prepaid return bag for any clothes that I didn't like which is a super smart business move and I'm glad they didn't charge me for returns (which helped make this more risk-free for me). Oh, and they threw in a cute little personalized note that I appreciated because I love little personal touches. 

Amber Straight Leg Pant

This was the very first thing I saw when I opened the box and I feel like Lili (my stylist) purposefully put this on top on my box because instantly after seeing these pants I decided that stitch fix was perfect for me. What I love about these pants is that they're very similar to what I already wear to work and are very professional so I was completely sold. They're this really pretty blue-gray color that really would go with everything just like jeans do so I was glad that I was sent such a versatile pair of pants. Not only that, but these things are CRAZY comfortable. They're super starchy so although they look very professional, they feel more like you're wearing leggings so I instantly fell in love when I put them on. If you just want to get the pants, here's a similar pair from the same brand!

Kelis Dot Print Blouse

My second piece was also for work so I was really happy because right now I rotate through about 10 shirts and I need business professional and casual clothes since this is really my first job that had an elevated dress code. I loved the material and look of this shirt because it was breezy and would be great for layering. However, it did have elastic at the bottom of the shirt and I'm just not a fan of that so I knew that I wouldn't end up wearing it if I kept it because the elastic would bother me too much. Other than that, I thought the color was great and it actually matched the pants Lili sent me (I'm guessing she did this on purpose so that I would get a set out of this box) which I really appreciated because if I was brand new to my job and had literally zero clothes to wear then at least I would have one go-to outfit. Here's a similar top that is almost the same pattern but is a button up.

Mollee Knit Dress

And the work clothes just keeps on coming! (this is an excited, not sarcastic, exclamation point; I'm officially a boring adult) At first I was not going to keep this dress because it was $88 dollars (see why I quickly changed my preferences from $50-100 to <$50) and #poor. BUT, then I tried this dress on and I was like there's no way in hell I'm returning it now. I mean I fell in love. Not only is it super flattering (got a compliment on it the first day I wore it from my HBIC coworker 😊) but it's also super comfortable. I mean it feels like the cotton t-shrit dresses that I love to wear to class. At first I was a little nervous because it was a little form fitting and didn't have sleeves, but the style card was right and it looks just perfect with a blazer/cardigan. It also is one of those dresses that would be great for an adulty cocktail party so yeah it was a keeper. I couldn't find this exact dress but here's a similar one from the same brand (that's also on major sale).

Bowie 3/4 Sleeve Dolman Knit Top

Funny story about this top... I already have it. In fact, I have it in both red and blue because my mom ordered one for me, I told her I liked it, so she ordered me a second one 😂. Needless to say, I didn't need three of the EXACT same shirts, so I knew instantly that this one would be returned. But besides that, this was my first casual shirt. What really impressed me was that I said I need a good mix of work and school clothes and got 3 work pieces and 2 class pieces so Lili really hit the nail on the head. Also, I really like this color because I feel like gray is such a versatile color and goes with everything so I was really glad that my stylist was thinking about what pieces would work in the most situations for me. One thing about this top is that the armpits are droopy which I personally don't mind but just a heads up if this style makes you feel like your shirt is oversized. However, if you do like baggy tops, here's a similar top.

Florettah Twist Back Knit Top 

         

Well Lili saved the best for last! I got this box just a few days before our blackout game and I had no clue what I was going to wear this year and when I saw this top I got so giddy because it was fate that my stylist had thrown this in my box. The back was so cute that for the first time in Tech football history, I wore my hair up for game day (but of course, curled, because it was game day). I'm still kicking myself that I didn't make Ryan take more pictures of it because I just felt so cute in this top and was so happy. I've already worn it with red jeans to the game and also discovered that it looks really cute with jeans and brown booties and a brown floppy hat (also mad I didn't get pictures in that. what can I say, I'm definitely more of a law school blogger than fashion blogger). But anyways, again I was really happy that my the color was so versatile yet also perfect for the Fall and upcoming Winter. Here's a similar top which is the closest that I could find that has a little open back but is still classroom appropriate.

Overall thoughts

I ended up keeping 3/5 of my pieces which I was fine with because the whole point of this is that I could have someone do the shopping for me and then I could send back what I didn't love. I'm glad that the 2 pieces I ended up not keeping were returned for little things like I already had it or I didn't like the bottom instead of that they just weren't me. I was super happy that Lili took the time to read through my Style Profile and actually only send me what I wanted. In fact, I liked her so much that I requested she be in charge of my next month's box. I downloaded the Stitch Fix App and went back and reviewed each piece basically like what I did hear telling her why I loved the pieces I kept and why I sent back the pieces I did. Overall, like I said I was surprisingly impressed with this whole process and would definitely recommend Stich Fix as a way to slowly build up your work wardrobe while getting in some great outfits for class if you're too busy to go to store after store and just browse around hoping for something to jump out at you.

How to Build a Law School Capsule Wardrobe

Almost exactly 2 years ago, I was a nervous little 0L who had no idea what to wear in law school. I even wrote this post about it. Coming from being a sorority girl in college, my entire wardrobe was nothing but Nike shorts and oversized frat tanks or forever 21 dresses. I seriously didn't even really have a pair of jeans that still fit, so I basically had to build up an entire new wardrobe for law school. 

What I said in my original post is still mostly true and if you do a Pinterest search you still pretty much only find pictures of Michaela Pratt (from HTGAWM) outfits. But I'm here to give you the low down on what law school is really like so let me be the first to warn you that if you show up in business casual on the first day of school, you'll be a little overdressed. In general, you'll probably only need a pencil skirt for major events or interviews and will be fine dressing a lot more casually the rest of the time.

But let me warn you not to dress too casually. One day my 1L year I was dressed like a slob and of course that was the day when my school email was like *surprise* the Court of Appeals justices are on campus today for lunch. I was too embarrassed to show up looking so sloppy because I didn't want to be disrespectful so I missed out on a great opportunity simply because of my outfit. And this summer I wasn't in the mood to put on makeup or do my hair and of course that was the day that my professor decided to move up my presentation to that day so I had to stand up in front of my class looking like I just got off a 12 hour flight. 

So long story short, it is worth it to put some effort to look decent for class. If you're coming straight from college and have no clothes like I did, this can get really expensive really fast. Luckily from my experience of spending 5 months abroad, I've learned about the magic of a capsule wardrobe. It's genius because you only have to invest in a few basic pieces that all mix and match to make a lot of outfits with not a lot of clothes. 

The basics

Jeans — Start with jeans, because you can get by with one or two pairs of jeans to begin with. A pair of light wash boyfriend jeans and a pair of skinny black jeans will literally go with anything. Yep, you can be that level of casual with jeans in law school. 

Leggings — Actually, you can even pull off leggings in law school. Just try to look nice and instead of a big t-shirt, try wearing a cute top and a cardigan. Since it is grad school though, I usually dress up my leggings with the rest of my outfit just a little so I at least don't look like I've just been out running errands.

Shirts — With shirts, make sure that they match each pair of your jeans (this should be easy) and that they're versatile. What I mean by that is that the same shirt will look just as good on you standing up in class reciting a case as it will while you're at dinner on a date. The easiest thing is to start out with neutrals like a white, gray, black, and black and white striped shirt. Monochromatic is a classic color scheme that not only will match each of your pants, it will also be super easy to add color in. 

Dresses — The next thing I suggest you look in to are the nicer basics. I looove t-shirt dresses and probably wear one to class at least once a week. They're comfortable but not so casual that I would feel embarrassed meeting a new lawyer in. Start with a chambray one, a striped one, and a solid color. Another thing I'm obsessed with is rompers. Both of these are great investments because you can make them work for both class and bars on the weekend.

Cardigans — Another nicer basic to invest in are cardigans. Either the AC will be blasting in your classroom or it'll be cold outside so they're always good to have on you. I keep one stashed in my carrel and if you have a job that's semi-casual, you can use these to get away with wearing spaghetti strap shirts to work. 

Sweaters — One last thing to add is a chunky knit sweater. You can wear them with jean shorts when it starts getting cooler or leggings when it's actually cold. They also are great to wear with long socks for a Netflix marathon over Christmas break, jussayin.

To make getting a new wardrobe cheaper, I suggest getting these basic shirts and then every month or so get a few new shirts in color and by the end of the year you should have a pretty solid wardrobe foundation.

The extras 

Here's something that I've learned that's crazy— shoes make the outfit! I know this sounds very Carrie Bradshaw, but hear me out. You can make one outfit work in all sorts of situations just by changing out the shoes. Here's what I mean...

See what I'm talking about?? Shoes aren't usually as "trendy" so a pair you buy this weekend will probably still be in style in 3 years. And to get real with y'all real quick, stress eating is a real problem in law school but the nice thing about shoes is that if you gain 10 pounds they'll all still fit you just as well. 

When I got to law school, basically the only shoes that I had were my Chacos and club heels so this is where I had to stock up the most because you can't exactly wear skinny jeans with chacos and you for sure can't wear club heels. So one day while I was procrastinating reading, I decided to shop around real quick and ended up on Zappos. It's basically the Amazon of shoes because they have everything plus 2-day shipping. Here's how I built up my shoe collection...

Sandals — As you may remember, I worked at the Texas Capitol during the summer when they're not in session so everyone tends to dress more casual. One day I saw a girl wearing Tory Burch Miller sandals and even though they're basically flip flops, they looked soo classy and actually not out of place at all. Obviously I had to get them so I got the black patent leather sandals and they've turned out perfect. What's funny is that in my office this summer, four other girls have worn these to work! Another sandal option that goes with everything but is half the price of Tory is Jack Rodgers. Both of these sandal brands are well known for their quality that lasts for years and also are always in style.

Sneakers — I love my Converse because they go with everything plus are super comfortable. I wear them several times a week to class and they're my go-to shoe to pack when I'm traveling. Even if you're just wearing leggings to class, swap out your tennis shoes for these and go for a Piko if you're set on wearing a baggy shirt and you'll look way more put together while still being just as lazy. Converse sneakers are classic, but another great sneaker to consider is Adidas. They're a little more in right now and look great with a pair of ripped jeans and a t-shirt.

Heels — I'm 5'2 so I personally love wearing heels to class just so my feet can touch the ground (short people probs lol). To pull this off without looking too overdressed for class, my favorite heels to wear are wedges when it's warm and booties when it's cool. My 2L year I got a pair of Steve Madden wedges and have been wearing them to my summer classes because they're so comfortable. To save money, get one pair of booties that will go with everything. The Toms Majorca is my personal favorite because it's brown and black so it basically goes with everything plus it's a peep toe so your feet won't get too hot and you can wear them Spring - Fall. 

Boots — Get you a pair of cognac riding boots. They look great with dresses without seeming too dressy (plus keep your legs warm in the fall) and always look cute with both jeans and leggings. Once it starts to get cool, I basically wear these every day to class. Another set of boots to save up for (or ask for birthday/Christmas) is quality rain boots. After years of making due with cheap Target boots, I finally got a pair of Hunter Rain boots my senior year and I literally get so excited when it rains so I can wear them. Get them in red! I swear every time I wear them I get complimented on the color. They run big but don't size down and then in the winter you can wear thick socks and make them into snow boots.

And that's it! I know this doesn't sound like a lot, but that's the point. If you get shoes that go with practically any top or a dress that versatile for almost any situation, you won't need to get a whole lot. You'll see that this is a good thing because if you're going to law school then you're about to be paying like at least $90k. To build up a wardrobe on a student budget, keep an eye out for when any of these things go on sale, and buy them once they do. The Zappos sale tab is great for this because there's always something on sale! Another easy way to make this as cheap as possible is to start out with the bare minimum (one pair of jeans, two pairs of shoes, and three tops) and buy one or two things each month.
